https://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/turnbull-government-uses-environment-law-to-block-christmas-island-mine-20180531-p4zio0.html

Here's something ... Turnbull goverment blocks a mine to save animals! The locals and miners wanted an extension to phosphate mine but it was blocked.

My start up google page gives me a cartoon of what I assume to be a head shot of Malcy and some birds ( feathered variety), an old style movie camera a deer and a squirrel ...

well, the new gst collection arrangements on "low value items" is set to commence on 1 july, and i for one am confused

apparently any overseas business with a turnover of > $75k (australian dollars i would guess) will be obliged to collect +10% and send it to peter dutton or some other potato

amazon have taken to directing business to their (surprise, somewhat pathetic) local site - but i am wondering what happens to the people i buy from : banggood / aliexpress / nominate any chinese vendor; oh, and occasionally ebay internationally ?

in the last week i have purchased 8 items - the biggest one was a set of blades and handle from japan, for model aeroplane building - $21.19 australian

the other 8 totalled $14.24, and were paid in american dollars via a 28 degrees card directly, or through paypal with that card (avoiding the paypal currency exchange hike) - the cheapest item was actually free, but i had to pay postage (engineering sample of a micro drone board), and the next cheapest was 1c (an american cent) plus some bonus points, with free post

what happens to the funds when these items swing through the border ? they were legally purchased prior to the onset of the tax, but most if not all will arrive on a slow boat from china probably some time into next month

will they be detained like a boat person ? will the ozpost guy demand the feds' cut ? do i understand how this will all work ? no... but i don't think many others do either

the ato website explained "low cost" by using the sample of a $200 teddy bear... but i don't know what they will make of my 3 metres of dual wall heatshrink tube, or the keyless universal chuck for the dremel, both of which are under $3 usd

i guess they'd like their 40c or so, on today's exchange rate, on each, but i fail to see how they will collect it

i predict china sending infinite numbers of gifts in the foreseeable future - how now, taobao ?

comments and clarification welcome

I'm guessing the numbers of items marked "GIFT" will skyrocket from China.

For a high profile/ranking job it's not really. 20 years ago I was making more than most senators.

The issue I have with politicians is the free ride the cunts get for the rest of their lives once leaving the job.

You can be on a salary of 100K but it's OK to spend of taxpayers money 200K refitting your office ... of course, that doesn't happen to us normal workers.

Poor senator says 200K isn't lot of money ... it's that one nation senator who joined the LNP ...

It's like another universe once a person gets into politics. Reality flies out the window. And the job becomes all about them and not the constituents and the issues of concern that we all face.

Bring their salaries and expense accounts back to earth, maybe then they will realise the job is not about having the money to buy properties etc. It's about all of us.

Um. This is the way grown ups sort out their issues ...

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-18/liberal-party-brawl-at-arncliffe-cafe/9883926

"A New South Wales Liberal Party meeting has seen one man hospitalised after a brawl broke out at a café in Sydney's south.

A senior Liberal Party source said the clash was "unprecedented" and a "tragic internal shit fight brought about by the pettiness of politics"...

...

"The source said the factional fight was for control of the Liberal Party body that selects Local Government councillors in the area.

One witness, who did not want to be identified, described the situation as an attempted "hostile takeover" of the branch.

"Just before the meeting started, there was an altercation where some people were intimidating and swearing and pushing and shoving of the others who belonged to the meeting," he said.

"Others outside were blocked from entering the meeting."

The man said an elderly lady inside the cafe was "trampled on", and a man who tried to intervene was "ganged up on".

"They started bashing him … they took him outside and started kicking him.

"To be honest I thought he was going to die.

The man also said some people tried to film the incident, but their phones were taken and smashed.

Police are yet to determine how many people were involved in the incident and are appealing for anyone with vision of the incident to come forward"

Nope, more like left in a bank vault without air.

Nope. They should be sacked and spend some time doing work experience with CenterLink. Seriously this is just jumping the shark big time. I'd ask them and the accepting pollies to feel shame ... but that'd be like trying to deny flies roadkill .
