Huh. I'd say hand-waving away the sixth great extinction event is pretty damn blase, if not even Pollyanna-ing.

No, not blase, realistic.

We have made one hell of a mess in a very short space of time, no doubt about it but the earth is very resilient and can look after itself pretty well.

The question really is whether the planet will tolerate humans, or at least humans in the quantities that currently exist for much longer and I do think that the answer to that is no.

Everyone wants to bad China for the damage done but it has been trying to do something about it for a very long time, the one child policy, only recently relaxed was seen as draconian but it was necessary and continues to be, the planet really does not need any more increase in population, a reduction would be preferable.

Everyone bangs on about the evils of nuclear energy but we do know how to make very, very safe nuclear power stations now and for all the hysteria over Chernobyl the area recovered remarkably quickly. Hell they even have eco-tourism going on there now.

Stronger population controls, probably by incentive, safe nuclear power, a massive reduction in plastic use, move to electric vehicles and improvements would be seen in not too many years.

Unfortunately humans are probably too stupid to go down that path...

Cheers

Short of doing what China did, the best population control historically has been:

1. Transform your state into a capitalist democracy

2. Establish equal rights laws and educate your women

The world population would dive off a cliff if tomorrow women woke up after a magic spell and realised they weren’t just a sperm receptacle for sheikhs, gurus and tribal warlords.

Partly it is the survival as in replacement imperative.

Historically couples had large families because there was an anticipated loss rate and there was no effective birth control anyway.

Now more children survive to adulthood in more areas of the world although starvation is of course still prevalent many places and birth control is readily available.

It takes time for generations to age out and for a population bloom to peak and reduce - not at all sure we are there yet.

Cheers

Well, they seem to be breeding faster than the plastics are killing them.

I've heard people go on about infertility caused by all sorts of things.....................mostly it's caused by the pill and other contraceptives!

Hell!

Even homosexuals are reproducing!

was quite enjoying it till it went all millions and such. The thing is, with Australian pollies it's not necessary to over blow the truth .... the basic reality is bad enough

get with the comment

i doubt sky news says anything real, but the guardian is correct that angus taylor is a twat

you delight in deriding people for being socialists, but you flippantly declare the guardian  for saying "boy cries wolf" when it's describing a liberal minister fabricating a report

so ignore isn't probably as accurate as "decline to acknowledge"

he's still a twat

yes, let's not hold a liberal federal politician at all responsible for producing a fraudulent document

it's not like there's any demonstrable standards for being a politician these days, so what does it matter ?

we shouldn't be so demanding of these hard working representatives of our great system, because it's a good system and the fact that they aren't so good is irrelevant

so long as money is happening, no problemo

so to paraphrase leo, the dog ate his homework ?

when "papers go missing" in a legal incident, it's a euphemism for corrupt management, n'est-ce pas ?

about as good a result as "i do not recall" in the witness box, but with additional interference by other individuals

the presumption that the guardian won't report an issue with any facts required is ... presumptuous

their spin on it is the opinion that pretty much all press imparts in the process

Oh what, so people can't have a critical opinion about the guardian cos it's the 'rag ' that you happen to think is selling the story straight .... but it's okay to rubbish the rest of the media cos basically their journalism is produced by Corporate rules.

I betcha bottom dollar the guardian does not survive soley on the donations they beg for every time you open their pages.

you can criticise it endlessly; it wasn't the issue, it was angus taylor being a dirtbag

the guardian is just another rag - i wasn't defending it, i was criticising the "honourable" member for hume
