HDD SMART reporting (juicy stats within!)

Recommended Posts

An interesting article published by BackBlaze (a cloud storage provider):

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-smart-stats/

They use A LOT of HDDs, and thus can publish meaningful statistics on what SMART statistics correlate (and don't correlate) with imminent drive failure.

Very interesting stuff.

Good article - I've had the impression for some time that most of what SMART returns is useless, this seems to confirm it.

For reference, the useful types:

  • SMART 5 – Reallocated_Sector_Count.
  • SMART 187 – Reported_Uncorrectable_Errors.
  • SMART 188 – Command_Timeout.
  • SMART 197 – Current_Pending_Sector_Count.
  • SMART 198 – Offline_Uncorrectable.
