SSD options

Recommended Posts

Looking at picking up a cheap SSD in the Thanksgiving sales. It'll be going into a fairly old computer - '08 era Pentium, maybe an original Core?

Anyway, it's a bit sluggish with that CPU, 2GB RAM and an old 200/320GB HDD. Figured an SSD will make it feel about as fast as it's able to.

My options are, all 120GB:

OCZ Vector 150, $55

Crucial MX100, $63

Samsung 840 EVO, $60

I know there's not much difference in the price, and performance will be limited by what I assume are first-gen SATA ports. More concerned with reliability I guess?

Prices are on Amazon - I'm in the US for a few weeks, so staticice is nice for me to see if they're actually on sale (checked the price of something the other day on newegg vs msy to see that the 4TB WD green was only $5 off after currency conversion).

Intel drive I remember seeing, newegg or Amazon or whatever, was over $85. I was going to get one because mine has worked flawlessly and yeah, warranty, but I'm not going to pay the extra 50% for it.

If it's an early Core or LGA775 based P4 then it'll likely have SATA2.

I'd also throw more Ram at it but very likely it uses DDR2.

Fuck it, went the Intel for the extra warranty - ended up only slightly more expensive by the time extended warranty was factored into the Samsung.

I'd add more RAM but the motherboard is some fun custom job from Gateway and won't take more than 2GB.

Nammed a spill-proof MS keyboard and a cheap 5 button gaming mouse for them too.

GG Amazon Prime next-day shipping, I know what I'll be doing tomorrow... fresh Win7 install. And hope I can find my Win7 install media. And then hope the settings transfer util will back up all the child safety measures, ie the black/white list of steam and etc games allowed per profile : \
