Is the Green Room usually this dead?

Recommended Posts

I think the last time I was here, I didn't have kids.

What happens when we all kick the bucket? Is the forum attracting new members at all? Or it's just a legacy that will die with the last of us?

It was dead but then you posted about a weeks worth in 10 minutes.

The activity on the forum server was such that it had to activate another core of the CPU that had been gathering cobwebs for the last 2 years.

It also caused a spike in electrical usage in the computer room. It'll likely now get flagged as a possible dope hydro site and get raided by the Qld cops.

LOL, well I'm procrastinating and there's nothing else to do other than post. I can't even clean because the bloody kids would wake up.

I think there are new members that go straight to the areas they require feedback from. Not too many so far have

strayed into this room :( ... good to see you here again, and if you and others keep popping in then the place should

just about survive us all ... your kids will be here to keep it going into the future :)

To answer your question. It has been pretty quiet here, on weekends particularly ...

Ah that makes sense - I forgot it was the weekend. I'm not working right now and all the days are a blur.

How do the new members requiring feedback find the forum in the first place? Is it advertised anywhere at all?

Hopefully at least one of my kids grows up to be some sort of techie... will have to wait and see!

Apparently facetwit killed us off, but I sit and I wait until the day that facetwit implodes in an orgy of narcissistic revelation. It could happen.

I notice the Green Room goes up and down depending on the time of the year. Most of the regulars usually come back when it gets quiet for them. But if you need anything someone will always help you.

Forums in general have been hit by the FB phenomenon, don't see the attraction myself in fact I sort of agree with D, people will tire of FB, all I ever hear from FB addicts is about how bad it is and how they keep messing with it. Wouldn't know because I've never joined.

Good to see you Kothos :)

Cheers

Been hearing that same phrase for *years*. And yet they're still there.

Ultimately, crowds draw crowds: doesn't matter if your nightclub has live music, cheaper drinks, and better decor; if the dive up the street is where their friends are going, that's where your customers are going to be.

True, although of late a number of people that I know have just stopped doing FB.

From my circle of friends and family I suspect that the enduring users of FB will be the technically illiterate and the older generations using it instead of other communication methods to keep in contact with friends and family.

So, 90% of the Internet? ;p

Oh, and "Hi, Kothos!", btw. ;) So wrapped up in my own shit I forget where I am, sometimes.

I still use FB for getting a good read with all sites now paywalled its the only place to go for news. But FB is big for business now ,companies and small business can virtually setup shop for nothing. Publicity is cheap and it spreads to all corners of the globe so FB used right can do you good ,just like twitter.

The thing with that 90% of the Net Cybes is they have the attention span of a thalidomide wasp :)

Please don't get me started on Twitter code :)

I do agree there are some business opportunities with FB which in the end will be the revenue model I'd suspect btw news, com.au is still not paywalled.

Hi Guys :-)

codecreeper, why don't you try a news aggregator like NewsHog? (Granted, that one's an Android app but I'm sure there are similar things for every platform.)

Yea pretty much.

I can understand IRC falling away from mainstream though (if it was ever mainstream).

Forums really only cater for special "needs" these days. Doesn't attract the majority of people anymore.

Defining Atomicans as "Special needs" might actually be about the most accurate tag ever mate :)

I would guess forums are a part of net evolution, the desire to cross-communicate, the net doesn't behave by prior "rules" hence my rather sanguine, because I'm not about to enlist, belief that blips like Myspace and FB are not going to set the future rules. What most every forum I have ever been engaged with has demonstrated is that it is really, really difficult to keep members stuck to the place. Atomic actually has done way, way better than anywhere else I can think of and that does include FB, we've been here much longer :)

That's not to say Atomic is immortal, I'd sort of hoped it was going to mutate and evolve a little but in reality it hasn't in the decade plus I've been here.

The future is yet to be written :)

Thats the main problem with Facebook, it has robbed the forum/s of being a main source of information for a single strain of knowledge.

People used to seek out groups interested in old fords or something.. and you would get pages of a forum with all usefull stuff, like fixing a door lock or something.

Now it is just post a photo of your car and it is over on FB. It makes it hard to have good resources compiled on the net, the was it was intended to be i believe.

Now it is spread all smongst personal information in face book servers and if you are not a friend your cooked. anyway.. i think you know what i mean.

I don't think FB et al. are solely to blame here. Specialist websites like those from StackExchange are very good at what they do. They take care of the technical questions, and completely dominate search results.

The irony is that the favourite phrase of the forum elite 'just Google it' sealed their very fate. Why sign up to a forum when you can get a higher quality answer instantly, and without friction? For opinions you have Reddit and social media, which encompass an endless number of communities within themselves that you can transition and contribute to seamlessly.

In the end, forums are too much effort. They're walled gardens with communities that struggle to adapt, with subsections that are dictated by admins rather than the users. On Reddit, you can make your own subreddit/subcommunity instantly. On a forum, you have a little fight with the owner, nothing is agreed on, then either nothing happens or some mediocre compromise is made. It's old media. We still exist because of habit and what's left of the sense of community. I say we just chill and ride it out.

I like forums because you get know the community better ,where with FB and Social Media its like a open door approach to discussions. Which is can be rather heated unless you know who is going to reply.

Facebook is like BBS's you either adapt or lose ,but forums still have a place in the communications arena. Its just knowing how to manage them.

We need more porn to get the forum numbers up.

Not that I am suggesting it, but someone starting another 'nekkid challenge' would probably drive a little traffic back this way.

But then those things don't usually end in sunshine and lollipops/

Unless there's a secure portion to post in, a "nekkid" anything is a bad idea. Perhaps you've forgotten, but people got hurt (mentally/emotionally) in the last one.
