Hello. I am looking to upgrade my current CPU (Intel Pentium G3258) to a quad-core. I was hoping to get an Intel I7 4790K as an upgrade but I wasn't sure if there was anything I could get for cheaper but keep similar performance, and if I was to upgrade, would I need to buy a water cooler because of course I will be overclocking it (I currently have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO). The budget would be at about $400 (not including postage).

Thanks

Forgot to state that it needs to be unlocked.

4690k will offer similar performance if your only gaming but will fall behind by ~30% when doing any work that makes good use of ht like rendering

4770k if your looking secondhand should perform similar to 4790k in rendering tasks but may need its ihs removed and new paste applied to keep temps down

212 evo is a capable hsf it will allow you to oc but may limit how far you oc depending on the chip

a good 140mm hsf will perform just as well as an aio cooler except maybe swiftech\ek provided case airflow is decent

I am using it purely for gaming and maybe some youtube, but no rendering. The 4770K isn't LGA 1150 so...is there anything else I should know about the 4670K? It looks like that's the best option.

2500k\2600k\2700k\3570k\3770k = 1155

4670k\4690k\4770k\4790k = 1150 there exactly the same cpu no real performance difference beyond some tweaks to lower temps for higher clock speed

6600k\6700k = 1151

this will give you an idea of the performance change from your current cpu to a i5\i7 in a game that likes a quad core
