Ok we all buy upgrades for our PC's Motherboards and cases and anything with Silicon in it.

But what happens when council dumps no longer accept it. Now they seem to be saying even E-Waste facilities no longer want anymore waste.

In the stages of moving i decided to do the right thing contact the council for advice on dumping all my old pc's and cases and software.

I can put 1 crt screen in hard waste ,or 2 LCD panels ,but that is my quota for the year and from this property. Cases they will not accept. Asked about DVD's and CD's and some old VHS tape's they said general waste. WTF all those can be recycled for heavy metal and plastic by products.

Now i understand why Adelaide's Wingfield dump burst into fire every Summer.

So why are councils now dumping the E-Waste schemes set out by both State and Federal Governments.

As i walk home i often see remnants of old CRT's on the street left out for garbage but is uncollected. Same with radio's and old Microwaves. Dumps will no longer accept them as E-Waste or under any category.

All that collection and e-waste recycling stuff would be heavily subsidised, or at least was. So that'd explain why they're cutting down how much you can chuck out.

VHS - not worth the bother to try and seperate the rubbish parts from plastic cases.

DVDs - probably even worse. Labels, paint, soft plastic parts of the case, dyes and metals impregnated in the media. All probably make them not worth recycling.

Computer boards and cards - the raw material content vs labour to seperate it out. Not cost effective. You sometimes see bulk CPU lots on eBay being sold for gold recovery. Those things aren't worth bothering with unless you're doing hundreds at a time, preferably thousands. The gold is a miniscule percentage, you'd probably need to do about 1,000 CPUs to recover 1 ounce of gold.

But still the heavy metals would be worth something?

Declaring E-waste as not recyclable is really a push in the opposite direction of recycling waste.

Which heavy metals?

Lead is now non-existent or present in really small quantities. But although it can be pricey the quantities in something like an LCD panel make it uneconomical. Though with lead the aim is to stop it getting back into the environment in concentrated form.

Stuff like copper, about the only economical scenario with a computer is if the heatsink uses it. In most generic situations the heatsinks are aluminium alloy. Wiring, usually aluminium as well.

Recycing just for the sake of it is often just wasteful. If you're using more energy to produce stuff like aluminium or copper than just doing it from raw ore then you have to question why.

Motherboards and Electronics have Heavy Metals and you could find them on other electronic goods.

In poor countries, they burn the stuff to extract the little gold in them.

and in poor countries they send little kids down in holes to extract the stuff we have on the screens of our mobile phones.

This is why i am all for recycling Electronics ,the only thing from the Greenies i agree on. Except on the bags at super markets where you have to buy them. Proven to be worse than before now.

But we don't have infinite ore...we could however recycle things to get aluminium, considering Australia only has 1 aluminium mine and we'd save on exports, but everything else I would either salvage, resell to collectors, or just sell it to poor countries so they can get their poor kids to get gold and shit out of them...tbh, I would love a PC from like 1970-ish, that'd be sick

* bauxite mine

And there are 5 of them.

And Rio Tinto is expanding Weipa as we speak.

I have some old amiga's which i keep very clean. An Amiga500 with an A590 with ram chips inside ,An A2000 with a 25mhz board inside with scsi interface.

I very rarely throw my old pc's out ,now i want too no one will take them. Suppose i can bury them under the house if need be.

Are you even allowed to do that?

MITS Altair 8800 was released in 1975

MITS Altair 8800 was released in 1975

It also was not a PC.

Technically, Olivetti got to there before anyone in 1964, but they we still called microcomputers. The term "Personal Computer" was used in about 1972, with the Alto, but the general uptake of the name "PC" didn't happen until IBM marketed their 5150 boxes that way in 1981.

Just caus we havent found the console key for earth yet; when we do we'll just "GreedIsGood 5000000" and we'll be set.

Some low end Amigas (esp 500 with Ram expansion) and most early PCs will have the old nasty NiCad batteries, which are a bad thing to just chuck out.

That reminds me... should check mine, they have a reputation of rupturing and leaking when they get old.

Well, the battery is doing more about tech recycling than the government...

I already told him similar when he was throwing up the idea of what to just chuck out when he was preparing for Qld.

Wouldn't surprise me if a lowly Amiga 500 fetched $100 these days. I've got 3 of them, will hang onto them too for now.
