Master_Scythe 541 Posted March 1, 2017 Yep, its still a gsm phone so its a useless brick in Australia. No 3g or 4g since they used the same comms chip from 2g nokias wow... thats a big stupid on their part. There must be thousands of early 3G chips laying around. You know, the basic 3G, before you even got HUSPA. They could have kept it super cheap AND made it useful. Shame....

SceptreCore 123 Posted August 20, 2017 The Nokia 8 is a proper flagship at a proper flagship price!
Rybags 1,171 Posted August 20, 2017 So what's the deal, is Windows phone now dead and buried? Or are they still producing them? So badly executed - I've said before if they made a half decent Windowds x86 based phone with HDMI port they could have taken over the world.

Some former Nokia exec's started started a company called HBM, who bought back the naming rights from Microsoft. Now they outsource the manufacturing of these phones to the another company and slap the Nokia brand on it with Nokia's blessing.

Rybags 1,171 Posted August 20, 2017 Atom, or these days you could almost do one with a Core M. I've got a quad-core Atom in my Win8 tablet, it's not a whirlwind but for desktop drone chores and older gaming it's fine. The problem is such convergence of devices would probably hurt their sales in other areas.
Nich... 739 Posted August 20, 2017 Yeah, these days Intel have some decent mobile chips, but not for the last 5 years.
Rybags 1,171 Posted August 20, 2017 They really had to play catchup for things like power consumption/heat but they seem a lot better now. Really, it's a mystery to me why we can't have a phone that you can use as a normal Windows computer on your TV.

Jeruselem 796 Posted August 20, 2017 Nokia 8 looks nice. I could get a Nokia 6 at jbhifi but I'm not in a hurry.
Master_Scythe 541 Posted August 20, 2017 So badly executed - I've said before if they made a half decent Windowds x86 based phone with HDMI port they could have taken over the world. I don't disagree, for the business market. But the consumer demands light thin and fast. None of this can be achieved with current X86\x64 architecture. We'd need to triple the battery size to make a full day, which I'm OK with. Their better bet would have been to stick with ARM, included a FULL windows RT, and made most of the store free for 'phone owners'. The old 'Skype Phone' from 2004 sold like hotcakes. PDA's with windows CE sold almost as well as Palms. Imagine if your phone (I agree, with HDMI) could have office, skype, VLC player, full web browser, you name it. Include the Java runtime and maybe GTK or some such and the program world opens up to you. There was ways to make Windows Phone popular without having to care about architecture too much. I mean, Windows Phone was already fucking great. It just worked! It synced with outlook, it was the most stable IMO, and it was intuitive. Just poor execution. Processor is clocked too slow.. and tends to get really warm when gaming... the 6 that is. edit: speeling Edited August 21, 2017 by SceptreCore

SceptreCore 123 Posted August 21, 2017 CISC processors are just too much for the mobile space. ARM's RISC processors have simply dominated the space and there's no getting it back.
