Telstra NBN slow upload speed

Recommended Posts

So, I have Telstra FTTH NBN with a cable connection between my laptop and the Telstra Max-thingy modem (mind you, the wifi connection seems almost as fast).

I am on a 100/40 plan. OzSpeedTest shows my speeds at roughly 85/0.7, (ranging from 75-95/0.7) whereas speedtest.telstra.com shows it as 94/38.

Which one do I trust?

I'm particularly concerned about the 700kbps upload speed. I work from home and videoconference/teleconference a lot. I don't have many issues but I am having a delay on Aus -> USA -> Aus voice calls (call processing happens in USA) which I'm pretty sure is distance lag, but nevertheless, the tech working on the problem wants me to prove my upload speed is okay.

http://www.cloudping.info/ - Pings various servers all 'round the globe to give you a better idea what your real-world performance is going to be like.

BTW: Chances are excellent that Telstra is lying its arse off, no matter what they tell you. If they said the rain is wet, I'd want to go check.

Try http://www.speedtest.net and do multiple runs at local, interstate, international servers.

Wouldn't surprise me if T$ throttles the frig out of their NBN connections. It seems normal with ADSL in that people get a fraction of expected performance, so why not other physical layer types?

These pricks seem hardly better than Dodo, but at least Dodo's pricing reflects the quality of service.

CloudPing gives me these latencies

I also tried speedtest.net and the GoodGearGuide speed test and they give almost identical results to the Telstra test.

So, there's something wrong with the way OzBroadband do their test?

Ouch! Don't try to play any games on US servers. :p Apart from that, though, I've seen worse - both in latency and variability.

Edit: And yeah, that upload speed blows chunks.
