Tight fisted VR upgrade suggestions

Recommended Posts

So my Oculus Rift arrived with Touch controllers and my current PC isn't exactly a power house, I don't want to spend $$$ on it because I've spent so much money on other tech it's hard to keep justifying it to the wife.

Current system:

Core i5-750 OC 50% at 4Ghz (That is Haswell generation there)

ASUS P7P55d-E Pro (16 lanes of PCIe 2.0, USB 3.0 and crappy SATA 3 implementation that runs at SATA 2 speeds)

8GB RAM (2 x 4GB @ 1600)

512GB SSD (Thanks to Atomic / PC Authority)

Corsair 500W PSU

Crossfire 2 x 7950's (so many problems with Crossfire)

So I don't want to spend too much to get my Oculus Rift to work with games like Elite: Dangerous, so I was thinking of not upgrading the motherboard and CPU, which I know will hamper any new GPU I purchase but it would cost a lot and I don't think the price to performance is worth it, agree or disagree? I want an AMD GPU because I like to support the underdogs.

So upgrade existing system to:

16GB RAM (4 x 4GB @ 1600)

AMD VEGA 56 8GB or AMD RX 580 8GB

Would that allow me to play Oculus Rift well enough to enjoy it and not to puke?

Considering the CPU would limit the GPU, I was thinking of undervolting and underclocking the GPU a touch to dramatically reduce power consumption and heat generation, without affecting fps (due to CPU limitation). However VEGA architecture is supposed to offer improvements in optical recognition, which is something I am trying to play with in the past few months and failing miserably at.

i believe a gpu upgrade will get you there

drop your res right down and see what fps you get as this should reduce\remove the gpu limitation and pass it to the cpu so if your fps are fine at a low res (90+) they should be good at higher res once you get a new gpu

if you just want a little more try oc your ram even 1866 with tightened timings could boost cpu performance by around 5% with a little luck

you can find info on ram stability testing here http://www.overclock.net/t/1569364/official-intel-ddr4-24-7-memory-stability-thread

best to start with booting into linux to run gsat so you don't corrupt your os if that passes move on to hci

i just picked up a osvr hdk2 headset and found the image quality is unplayable although it may be ok in anim games with not texture detail how are you finding yours? from what i have read there isn't much difference between them image quality wise

Check out newegg, i just ordered a gtx 1080 from there about $300 cheaper than in australia and arrived to my door in 4 days. My 1080 set me back $760 delivered, You can get a 1070 for around $650 delivered. I ordered my upgrades for the exact same reason ordered the cheap rift package.

We've done VR displays with 480s and 580s, so if you were to get a more overclocked card like the Aorus RX580, that should be totally fine for VR gaming :)

I've just bought an AMD VEGA 56 from PLE for $559. I'll sell my two 7950s for whatever I can get, I just don't have the time anymore for tinkering due to kids.

I wouldn't know, it is being transferred from one store to another to the be shipped out from that store to me.

I also don't have any home broadband until Tuesday and I should be getting 100/40 NBN... though I imagine the actual speeds will be a lot less.

So I'm playing with my kids for now as they should soon be neglected by me.
