YouTube Rewind... Is It Becoming Lame?

Recommended Posts

I recently saw a video from I Hate Everything that totally criticized the new YouTube Rewind, and i had to admit, it was a total hit and miss. And because i know my mum will say that i'm just following the masses, even BEFORE i saw that video, i watched YouTube Rewind, and i just thought it was totally lame.

I think it's mainly because YouTube is caring less and less about the YouTubers we all care about and are just putting whatever people they think are interesting and have made the trending list into YouTube Rewind. I mean the remixed song is really cool and the visuals are stunning, but because there are so many people that i have no idea who they are are in there and the people i DO know are totally hidden in the background and makeup, i can't enjoy it.

So i wonder, anyone else getting sick of these YouTube Rewinds and want to say when was the last GOOD one? I personally think it was 2015, but that's just me. What does everyone else that watches YouTube think?

I had NFI what it was until I went and looked for it.

Still got NFI, is it some sort of internal promotion of what was viewed a lot in the previous year?

The thing I've got trepidation about now is that thanks to them fucking over the suggestion algorithm, I'll probably be bombarded with "popular" shit that I hate for the next month.

I have no idea what Rewind is, but since your description of it sounds like a "best of" list, I also have no interest in finding out.

Now, if you want an opinion about things YT is sorely lacking... a "New" category. I can find stuff in my bubble, or if it's already trending, or if I explicitly search for it, but there's no way I can see to find anything fresh.

Pretty much. It's MEANT to be a celebration of all the most popular songs, memes, topics and youtubers in the past year.

TBH, the first ones from 2012-2015 are pretty cool if you know your youtubers and songs.

So much pointless pap.

The masses it would seem, or should I say, the under 35s, would sit there for hours on end watching cute farm animals jump and fall over each other.

Me... I'd spend an hour watching a video of a bloke trying to troubleshoot the stubborn 40 year old diesel tractor that's sat in the back of the barn since the mid 90s.

But not where PBS Spacetime is. I watch way more informational stuff than entertainment.

well, this should be all PBS Space Time for the last week + some other shit...

https://www.youtube.com/results?sp=EgIIAw%253D%253D&search_query=pbs+space

not ideal, but filtered results for 'last hour' 'today' 'this week' etc could be made very flexible and selective if you bothered to refine a long query with booleans covering each area of interest

there is no option to search for "*.*" that i know of, HOWEVER that probably wouldnt help much when you consider 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute!

nasa has a good feed too

i wasn't considering purely educational stuff, as aeon and vimeo are much more inclined to "arty" stuff, and even youtube has some impressive channels

i liked this :

but it is drowning in dross that is clickbait

[YT] is drowning in dross that is clickbait

Unfortunately very true - and my Mum watches a lot of it! UFOs, crop circles, Nibiru, even a few "free energy" machines... At least she laughs at most of it, but it still drives me nuts.

:)

I've seen a couple of UFOs - no idea what they really were, walked through a couple of crop circles - baffling. Nibiru, well, it's possible we don't pay a lot of attention to the Oort cloud really, more looking much further out. "Free energy," nothing comes from nothing, energy is about attrition, you find a way to make it, usually not particularly nice or not reliable, it gets used, you make more...

Say hi to your mum for me, met her for all of 10 seconds but she was a nice lady :)

Cheers

"Free Energy" research is more about finding wasted energy we didn't know about.

For example, if I had some form of collector, I could light my house for free.

I'm fairly close to a train line, and as such, my fluorescent lights never actually turn all the way off (Had to switch my bedroom to LED to get sleep, lol).

Had the house checked twice, wiring is fine.

If I unplug the bulb it stops, but if I carry it closer to the tracks it glows slightly.

It's like people who are learning about Tesla Coil spark gap.

Why can we get "Free Energy" from the spark, without observing a loss at the tip?

It's fascinating, but really, it's just more learning, not 'free' as is implied.

Perpetual motion machines, based on magnets. That's not tapping waste - it's straight up fraud.

+1 Spacetime, subsribed a while back. Fermilab also has a good channel but not as good post-production, effects etc.

Veritasium (sp?) seems OK too though only checked out a few of theirs.

As to the Rewind nup no idea. I did however just read this on my news feed ...

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-12-08/firefighters-remove-mans-head-from-microwave-after-prank/9239688

" Firefighters remove man's head from microwave after YouTube prank goes wrong "

I guess what I'm saying is is youtube is not the only place to find stupid

Great show; easy to follow. Doesn't get insanely complex.

Also check out Physics Girl and VSauce if that's your speed. And then there's the family of SciShow, SciShow Space, and SciShow Psych for rapid introductory-level stuff.

Got to correct you there chris. You can't make energy, all you can do is convert it from one form to another.

That's what they teach in physics class Ali, although it begs the question of where did it come from then?

Wind blowing over your roof is not much use as energy until you harness it with a windmill, nor is a lump of coal, or uranium, until you burn it.

Perhaps " transmute" is a better word :)

Cheers
