When will be the next World War?

Recommended Posts

The “total war” of WWII will come back, worse than ever with the use of all military technology available. By 2050 at the latest, one of them will start a war.

The question is whether it will be North Korea, the US, Russia or China that starts it.

Unless they oust him, Trump could start it as an "Everyone vs US" match purely to rid the world of (unspecific theistic) evil. I can just see countries lining up and building their missile aiming capabilities to the point where they can target a single person and then do a coordinated missile strike on wherever he is standing. Then all standing around slapping each other on the back and looking at a satellite image of a crater with a blonde toupee in it.

Or possibly England will drop a nuke on Scotland. :P

C'mon you lot! Geopolitical spam can be crunchy! ;)

:)

I'm not convinced NK could hit China and it's next door, let alone the U.S. Also, sort of by accident the U.S. has a substantial ABM capability, no way is a crude NK missile going to get even close. Of course retaliation would be very swift but non-nuclear, that's the problem with the peninsula.

I can't see Russia or China initiating any conflict, the former know they would lose, the latter are too busy making money.

I suppose the Brits MIGHT nuke Scotland, to win a soccer match, but the trouble is they have a lot of military assets up there -, believe me, I used to work there, god forsaken place that it is, still at least the women are friendly :)

Cheers

Okay, shouldn't be feeding the troll but I'll bite - which one of which total who?

Sounds more like Skynet's still in nappies there and hasn't gotten that far past the "Daisy, Daisy" stage yet.

Anyway, Summon The Banhammer! Preferably before 2050...

Yeah, but checking out what's actually under the skirt after a few too many at the bar could be a bit of Russian Roulette, right?

Anyway, Summon The Banhammer! Preferably before 2050...

Oh I know what's under the skirts mate, and not talking about the males, I don't lean that way :)

To be serious I don't actually know what the defon level is at the moment, been trying to get away from the game for years, but post Singapore I'd imagine it is quite low.

I may not like Trump, or Putin, and I don't, but it's gamesmanship, they know there are no winners in a WWIII.

You don't have to worry about feeding the troll. He got ousted from under the bridge and the door locked behind him. :)

I just thought you lot might like to shoot the breeze and do something useful with the future clickbait. :P

Had noticed Chaos :)

It's an interesting subject but in the end WWIII is either not going to happen. which I suspect is the case or as someone said years ago WWIV will be fought with sticks and rocks...

We live in interesting times, very old Chinese curse, I'd prefer they were less interesting for my kids if nothing else...

Asimov, IIRC.

I think you are completely correct Cybes - ever think both of us might just read a bit TOO much ? :)

Pretty sure it was Einstein, if not then someone high up in the Manhatten Project - and it might have even been before the first successful detonation. Asimov would have only been 25 at that time.

Hmm,

Probably more a case of who put it into print I suppose Ry.

I recently finished an historical account of the Manhattan Project, no mention of it in there, but not much in the way of Einstein quotes either.

Snopes sheds a bit of light on it but it's inconclusive.

Seems to me it's a saying that had an evolution so probably impossible to nail the origin.

Unpossible! <homer/>

Actually, I think I could probably do with more - just a little less SF and more (any?) 'literature'.

After doing a useless degree course that I never completed in English Literature many moons ago I think I've probably had enough Austen and Bronte sisters, let alone Shakespeare to last me a few life times :)

I tend to read more documentary factual books these days, although that is not reflected in my current mixed reading pile of SF, an adventure novel and a tad of erotica :)

I never seem to be reading just one book at a time, which completely bemuses people who know me. The commonest question is how do I keep the plot lines straight in my head ? Never had a problem with it, but maybe that's what a lifetime of study creates ;)

I would be more worried about India and Pakistan lobbing a few nukes at each other, or some sort of combined Arab offensive trying to take out Israel who may just fire off a few retaliatory nukes if there was no chance of survival. Whether either would expand in to a full world war I couldn't say.

Hmm,

India and Pakistan is mostly religious politics. Sure, both have nukes, but not many and if you start chucking them around there you are going to do yourself just as much harm as those you are attacking.

Israel...Dunno, there is an approaching certainty that they have nukes, deniably disassembled, the Dimona reactor never really made sense for anything else but producing weapons grade materials. However the Arabs have lost so many wars against the Israelis I doubt they would want to start another one.

Would either blow up into a full world war though? I doubt it. China would not like a nuclear war on it's doorstep but there would be no profit in intervening, Israel doesn't really need any help beyond money to fund weapons and they get plenty of that from the U.S.

I think I need to find a beautiful blonde and go live on Mars, this planet is driving me nuts :)

I think it's already a proven that open world-warfare today is just tooooo bloody expensive for any country to really want to undertake. Also, it's well known that people and their politics are fickle-to-the-core.

The wars currently in operation are causing enough of a drain as it is.

Heh, money only comes into the equation AFTER the war Ev.

I came back from one to find I actually had more in my account than when I left , they had been auto-paying me and I'd been living on their dollar. I wasn't going to argue, just took the girlfriend to dinner and found us a new flat.

They do not pay you very much to put your life on the line but the cost of the equipment is mind boggling.

Fortunately I do not do it any more but it was a lot of years...

Cheers

I’m probably a bit more optimistic than OP, but I don’t foresee another global war. I foresee small conflicts held to an increasingly higher standard of care with respect to civilian casualities, except for one or three troublesome places.

In the next world war
In a jackknifed juggernaut
I am born again

In the neon sign
Scrolling up and down
I am born again

In an interstellar burst
I am back to save the universe
