Not really. I could not be fucked wasting two hours configuring a phone...
I don't even spend that long configuring my laptop to how I want it.

Probably because it's a MacBook and works as required immediately.

Precisely. I ditched my X1 Carbon in favour of the MacBook Pro. Less time wasting on tweaking, cleaning etc.

My job is Word, Excel, RDP, Citrix, Chrome and permutations of Terminal.

I’ve just acquired an iPad Pro. Will see if I can simplify my life further.

I joke that I can make Unix dance, have a triple MCSE and prefer Mac. Android consumes too much time on a personal device to end up doing what an iOS device does for me.

I've got 3 operational Macbook Pros in my posession ATM.

I tell people... the best thing you can do for a Mac, is put Windows on it.

My work MBP is in Windows probably 97% of the time.

I just find Windows much easier and  faster to use in general.  The keyboard shortcuts are easier and more intuitive.  Doing stuff to various windows with the mouse is faster.

I also find it annoying that they still persist with only having the in-focus program's pulldown menus available to you at a time.

But on the other hand, MacOS wins pretty easily with regards to updates (not to say either is near perfect), and feels much less like a spyware platform than Win10.

i remember back when apple thought they were really clever to add a second button to their mouse

meantime i have generally used 8 (configurable) buttons on my logitech mouse(s) since last decade

windows10 is pretty abysmal (still using 7 till it becomes risky), but i grok the basic install having no chance to avoid it at work, as our clinical software got "improved" to require it  😞

One of very few things I like about 10 over 7 is the way copy/move works - nice that it stacks them and gives you the pause button which means you can just queue a bunch up.  And nice that the status window is independent of the explorer window that initiated it.

The great thing about 7 ATM is that updates are near non-existent other than security etc.  so it hardly bothers you.  The incremental feature updates of 10 every 6 months are just a big wank.  And the inbuilt Metro apps are utterly attrocious.  Funny how you browse through pics with a beast of a Core i7 or something, yet you can see the JPEG progressively render as if it was an old Amiga doing the job or something.

Were the service packs for Win7 big wanks, too?

I must have time on my hands or something, I LIKE tuning Android, and Ubuntu for that matter, I don't really want Cupertino making my life easy for me - to each their own  🙂

(I do regard my way as being more "Atomican" not really interested in appliance computing 🙂 )

Cheers

I think Atomic had a real hot-rodder's ethic; almost into customisation for its own sake, because there are so many ways to improve over plain vanilla, particularly if informed by some preferences. Android is amenable to that approach, while iOS is like a fleet of white Camrys, silver Mercedes, and dark grey people mover/SUV shitboxes for the undiscerning masses.

Can you move the caret through a text field with the volume button on your phone? Why the hell not?

Tell you why - it hasn't had time to catch on like a shitload of other tweaks have.

...Well, I say that, but it has to be at least a couple of years old... Now I'm picturing a line of Camry drivers piled up in one lane next to an empty one, as they do.

A pretty good analogy Kimmo, real Atomicans are indeed hot-rodders 🙂

I have no idea if HP would even vaguely recognise what this machine is now and it does not matter, I paid for it to make it mine not drool over it 🙂

Cheers

Dont know the password for the account and the email address was with a company that doesn't exist anymore

drop one of the mods a message - i had the same problem! couldn't remember my password and the email account was with a provider i no longer used, and therefore the account no longer existed... Nich was kind enough to replace the email address for me, and let me sort out the rest...

as far as phones go, i've run both iOS and Android, both have their pros and cons... i have used an iPhone as my personal phone since i got a 3GS.... upgraded to a plain 4 (not even the 4S), then to an SE... the first SE i made the mistake of pre-ordering... it arrived in the mail... vibrate never worked from day one and then less than a year later the charging port crapped out... bought a second SE, this one is working much better and has already outlasted the first... i don't update my iOS (as it has been proven that apple deliberately slow down older tech with new updates), so it still works as well as the day i got it... and i will keep using it until i can't anymore... i am hoping they bring out another smaller phone, and i will probably upgrade then... if not, fiik... 😕

i am really out of the tech loop these days... but then i dunno if i could actually say i was really in it, Atomic was far more of a social thing for me - while i knew what all the parts where and could build a nice gaming box from scratch, i rarely strayed outside of the Green Room... hell i stumbled across the IRC channel by accident, and was active in there for a good amount of time before i realised what this thing called a forum even was... i still run Win 7 and have zero plans to upgrade lol...

My memory of those halcyon days was that it celebrated those with the time and skill to DIY.  That feels a little different to the 'haha you use apple you're so vanilla you suck' vibe that often comes up (which is still authentic to the the previously mentioned days, but in an entirely different context).

I don't know if we always had the skill but we sure had the sense of adventure and were probably a bit reckless sometimes although I don't recall ever breaking anything irreparably.

These days I'm all portable, but I still hack both within the code and with externals. Not as pretty as it once was but a damned sight quieter  🙂

Cheers

Back in the day my lovely wife was quite content to get by without a drivers licence.

This is what she does now!

I assume that's got something more significant than an old carb equipped 5.0?

Started out as a bog stoke 253 and we got it down to 12sec 1/4 mile then we swapped it out for a 400Hp 355  all Holden stroker. Best now is a 11.35sec quarter

Bollocks to that Ivan it's about the only advantage of getting old AFAIK. Young and cranky you are just a nuisance, old and cranky you have "life experience".

Nothing to complain about with that IMO.

What class does the missus race in?

Vanilla tends to suck (half-second long-press delay, anyone?), so those with a DIY ethic can have a hard time understanding why so many folks don't care... especially given the vindication of so many backyard tweaks eventually becoming mainstream.

The ignorant masses tend to react to those who push the boundaries in almost any field of endeavour that ultimately benefit society in negative ways; anywhere from background microaggressions to outright persecution; it's somewhat contemptible, no? Consider the douchebags who slag off environmentalists and 'social justice warriors' (in what demented headspace is that a bad thing?), who don't seem to mind advocating for a shittier world for their own descendants to inhabit.

I'm well aware misanthropy isn't a healthy attitude, but damn. He might have a heart of gold under the layers of interalised propaganda, but the man in the street is a fucken dipshit.

And I'm supposed to love him anyway... at this rate, it's gonna take while for the meek to inherit the Earth... not sure there's gonna be much left of it.

But I digress. Howdy, Ivan!

petrol "sports"

i get it, but i don't get it - amazing, but burning fossil fuel to go quite fast for a really short distance, while producing a cloud of burnt rubber

my idea of (non-competitive, admittedly, though there are contests) hand launched radio gliders, and boogie boarding (when i wasn't sun averse)

each to his / her own i guess

I have a 1300cc V-Twin Superbike and I won't be getting rid of it any time soon. Unless I write it off.
Electric motorcycles can lick my balls and slurp on my pooch juice.

Yeah, be at least a little careful with that bike Twinny, please?

They are a great source of adrenaline catharsis but, about a decade ago I took a mate's 1100cc something for a quick run, took me  a few seconds to just keep the font wheel on the ground 🙂

I'm not interested in electrical either, the day my Pug produces ANY smoke I'll do a tear down and rebuild, shows no signs of it at all atm, and heading up to 200,000 kms.

Cheers

I have not interest in electric for motorsport other than KERS type systems, and really they're only practical for F1 and other specialist type vehicles - and from a sport standpoint just have the value like a once in a while nitrous boost "proxy".

And I do say, such systems have relevance for everyday motoring, but hey - better town planning would save multiples more dinosaur squeezings from going to waste.
