does she have another parts left?  If just for browsing the internet and solitaire,, grabbing an ssd will seem like a huge upgrade to an aging pc.   Dasa parts guide does have the cheapest gaming rig sticky thread, 1st page.  But you could get away with all used parts possibly it sounds like.  Like on the below cpu, ebay you can get it used for probably under 100... Get a small ssd with 120 - 240gb...  Can grab even slower/cheaper ram and psu, but a good reference is below:

What CPU and how much RAM?

As mentioned a SSD with a fresh install maybe all that is needed.

But if it is a old atom like the laptop I recently tried to speed up it will still be sluggish and stutter playing utube at 480p.

SSD does wonders to old systems (as long as it supports SATA2 or better).

It's so odd we once considered Atom CPU's in netbooks an 'amazing thing'.....

Even in their day they were NOT good, and only preceded regular mobile chips by a year, if that. IIRC

They DID overclock extremely well though......

If both a Intel Core CPU and Atom of the same time were compared for basic desktop use with a HDD and no youtube you would struggle to notice the difference but once you add a SSD to both the differences become clear as the core laptop starts loading things much quicker while the Atom doesn't really chnage.

The first few generations of Atom were about 10 years behind desktop CPU performance when they were released.

Yes lie the PC case flat to minimize the risk a sudden bump could dislodge RAM or cables. They can wiggle loose ...
