So, so many old (welcome) ghosts in this thread. One final spark before everything fizzles out for good?....

Good meeting all the people I met here in person too... probably into the 200+ area.

Have barely seen any in the last 10 years though, I think the last event of any officialdomness I went to was an overnight camp with Chef, AccessDenied, Fenn and a couple of others, probably around 2007-8.

Used to run into Dajobo or Chef in my travels on average once per 6 months but haven't seen either in nearly 2/over 4 years.

Expect a long eulogy from me at some point.

To say this place changed my life, isn't even a grain of sand.

I was damn near suicidal, struggling with friends (or lack of) and the loss of my vision.

Then superfireydave gave me a few leads to chase up, and suddenly I was able to get my sight worked on, and things started to fall into place...... There's so much to say, and i will, but not now.

There simply aren't words right now.

Especially during the COVID stress. It didn't matter if I was stuck in the city for a night, staying on a couch, in my own place, this was GENUINELY home.

I have so many stories.

And now it's going....  worst timing.

For a digital nomad, the house wasn't important, the connection speed wasn't important; where you hung your hat was where your login lived.

OK, I need to genuinely go have a sob, because my rock in this scary world right now has just been thrown to sea (or, started sinking), and I'm not sure where I'll go.

One question though Ben;

Everything comes down to money.

You can see the stats.

Of we put an Oceania IP filter on these forums; how much is the data+hosting likely to run the 'owners'?

Surely if it's 'free' there's no issue.

We had the last big move with the new forum "barely seeded".

If a new one started with look/feel but no content, it wouldn't be a huge drama.

Though... just looked through my PM list - would be nice if there was some utility that could export them.

Does anyone remember ElvisAlive? Is that a thing? It feels like it was. It just popped into my head. I think it was from here. I remember that handle, and some whacky stuff going down.

Maybe....

I've been dropping in every other month when I think of it to the tech sections to see if there was much activity. Unfortunately, it's been too quiet to stick around for.
This is a sad announcement. The end of an era.

AtomicMPC fed my love of gaming, PC's and hardware when I was younger. Sure I had nerdy school mates to help feed that desire but without the mag I doubt I'd still be looking at PC benchmarks and prices every day just for fun.

This place was brilliant at its height. Majestic in its fervour for all things tech.

I'm glad I was a part of it. As we split ways from this place, Atomic will always be in my heart and I'll forever be proud to call myself an Atomican.

Ben, thank you for making this place and community a reality. It really was something special.

😞

Well hell, I get a leave pass courtesy of slightly relaxed covid restrictions in S.A. to spend a day out and about with my sis, come home and find this...

Really, really going to miss the place, I'm really not sure just how long I've been here but like many it did start with the magazine. I bought an early issue out of mere interest because the newsagent had sold out of some other PC mag that I used to get mainly for the cover disk and was hooked. My then brother-in-law gave me a sub for my birthday and was loyal  right to the last issue but continued on here as well so I don't suppose that is much short of 20 years. Two decades that have been a blur for me, but that is less of a surprise than I thought, because the two before it were similar  🙂

The first few months I was only in the Tech sections, ventured just once into the Green Room or whatever it was called then and ran away as I once told Cisco. But I did come back and basically been here ever since.

Nothing much to do but enjoy it to the last I guess but the place led to a lot of friends and catchups courtesy of the insane amount of travel I used to do. Met so many people and quirky as many could be all very, very Atomican.

Take it easy folks, I can't say I'll be there in any of the other haunts because they are just not my thing but the memories will remain.

Sayonara...

Cheers

Oh, i'm typing i as we speak.

It's less a Eulogy, and more a 'my life up to this point'; with notes of how atomic was always involved in some way.

It'll be a boring read, but It's helpful for me to type, and anyone who wants to get to know me will learn a little.

It's strange how much I can dot atomic though my whole life.

It’s fairly easy to get a whole history of a site.

A forum contains pages that are all linked and all posts are public anyway.

You could scrape the entire forum except for PMs with wget and then parse it for specific post content, then inject into MySQL assuming the same forum software. You could even pre-register users so the posts match the username.

I’m not saying you’d do that because there might be a civil suit filed against you, but I’m saying it’s possible. Even with my skills and I’m no specialist in whatever this would be called.

Don't know why, but that's how I read it until 3/4 through the sentence.

Yep, he caused a bit of a rift with the tech section regulars. I don’t know if he was legit or trolling but looking back, a lot of us were jerks about it, including myself. He didn’t hurt nobody.

So elvisalive, sorry for being a dick dude, I’ll buy you a beer if I ever bump into you.

I sure do.

I remember being a dick to him for buying that V5 6000.

Which I'd fucking kill for these days.

Didn't he win POTM then disappear because we cyberbullyied him? I feel bad now

I guess that part of life and growing up though, looking back and cringing at your behavior. I certainly do.

Some of the dumb shit we would flame each other over 🤣

In some ways, it almost makes sense this would happen along with Covid, while every aspect of live is being changed and shaken up by this thing...

To all those I lost contact with over the years, and to anyone I managed to piss off or fell out with, hope ya'll are doing OK through all this.
