3870x2 Black Screens

Recommended Posts

I bought a HIS 3870X2 (second hand from 2SHY) outta trademart and I am getting blackscreens + autoreboot, I think I have narrowed it to underpowered or overheating.

I have tried winding it up the fan duty cycle through rivatuner, blackscreens still occur, usually after about 40 minutes to an hour and a bit.

I am now thinking it could be underpowered? Would this be right?

System specs:

XP Pro

AMD Phenom 9550,

2GB RAM,

1 x 250GB HDD,

1 x 3870X2, (8.11 Cats, no Control Center) no overclock, no 8 pin powercable

1 x Pioneer DVDR/W

Generic 500 Watt powersupply inside a....

Lian Li PCV350 (Small form factor)

I would bet money on it being your power supply, for comparison to a good 520w psu I run the following on a corsair hx520

-core i7 @3.8ghz

-6gb ddr3

-2x4870's in crossfire (which use signifiacantly more power than a 3870x2)

-2 hard drives

-dvdrw drive

-5 120mm fans

and everything runs flawlessly.

It's possibly an underpowered one, could you check the PSU to see the current (amps) on the different rails?

If they are under 18 on the 12v rail then it might possibly be your PSU and you should get a new one.

I used to use a 650w Antec True Power Trio with my 3870X2.....

now I'm using a bit more.........

That's... Nice...?

Anyway, the rail amps will be on the side of your PSU.

Generic PSU and 3870x2 ... not something that tends to mix well.

Put in a less stressful GPU and see if the system does the same.

oopsies. shouldn't start posting drunk, and crash out on the keyboard

:o

when I was running the 650w Antec Trio, my 3870X2 based system used to 'balk' at POST, and stutter occasionally in games, now that I've replaced it, with something a little more powerful, none of that happens
