xp problems on new build...:'(

Recommended Posts

I have just set up my new rig. It`s POSTing fine, but I`m having probs loading XP onto my new HDD. It`s a WD 640gb and I`ve got a SATA dvd drive.

when i finish installing xp i take the disk out (and yes i have made my hard drive second boot priority) and restart the computer goes to post and then goes to a pci device list page and tries to read the disk and ses a disk read error has occurred and then when i go into the BIOS and change the boot priority to hard disk it still ses a HDD read error has occurred

need some help poeple....just wanna get this rig gaming.

More information would be helpful.

IE, the model of motherboard, the type of SATA drive etc.

The exact wording of the error message would be handy.

But it's likely either your HDD has failed or your boot sector has become corrupted.

Boot to the XP CD and load the Recovery Console. First run a chkdsk c: /r (it'll take a while) then a fixmbr c: and a fixboot c:.

Reboot and try to load from HDD.

I think one of those fixmbr c: should be "fixboot".

Disk read errors are not a good thing to see.

I hope it's just a bad install and not a bad hard drive (which happens).
